Blacktown

Prospect

Lifestyle

Prospect is one of the 48 suburbs that make up the thriving sprawl of the City of Blacktown. It is 32 kilometers west of the Sydney CBD. The suburb takes its name from the historic landmark of Prospect Hill, from the top of which people could get a ‘prospect’ of the surrounding countryside. The Hill, though no longer in Prospect, is visible from many locations in the suburb.

Prospect is a typical, well-established Australian suburb. At one point of its life it had the heightened bustle of weekend activity with Homeworld exhibition homes and Ikea attracting droves from all over Sydney. These destinations have long moved elsewhere and Prospect is once again enjoying the placid vibe of an old neighbourhood.

People are quick to point out that it’s very friendly, quiet and safe around here. Most homes are taken care of and maintained with pride. The parks and streets are tidy and well looked after by the Blacktown City Council. Majority are long time residents, many have chosen to renovate and knock down and rebuild their original homes because they love the area.

Prospect is central to everything – shops, schools, transport and the shopping and entertainment offerings of nearby Blacktown CBD.

People

The population of Prospect at last count is 4,620 and the median age is 35. Households in Prospect are primarily couples with children. Like many suburbs in Western Sydney, Prospect has a multicultural make up.

Homes

Freestanding homes comprise majority of housing type here. Nearly half are fully owned reflecting a fairly established suburb where people like to stay long term. Older homes hankering for renovation or rebuild pre-sent good prospects (pardon the pun) for those seeking value.

+ Prospect’s most famous food and drink destination is the historic Roy-al Cricketer’s Arms, built in 1877 and one of the few remaining roadside inns that were on the Great Western Highway between Sydney and
Bathurst. It’s an old world establishment with no pool tables, gaming room or TAB, just great beer and pub food.
+ Also popular stops are Caffe Rossa and the Atura Roadhouse Bar & Grill as well as neighbouring cafés and restaurants like Tingha Palace at Blacktown Workers Club, the Paper Plane Factory in Girraween and Oak Bar and Grill in Eastern Creek.
+ Anyone decorating, renovating or seriously shopping for appliances and furniture in Western Sydney flock to Homemaker Prospect (formerly Homebase), the first purpose built centre of its kind in Australia.
+ Another Prospect institution is the Blacktown Markets held every Sun-day, known throughout Sydney for its eclectic mix of collectables, vin-tage finds, pre-loved bargains all in one mammoth continuous garage sale.
> Craving the joys of mall shopping? Head to Westpoint Blacktown or
Seven Hills Shopping Centre.

Recreation Facilities

+ You’ll be happy to know that there are four must-dos in Greater Sydney that are in Prospect!
+ How about a night out at the only remaining drive-in in Sydney? It has seen a revival, becoming Skyline Drive In, and offering a nostalgic yet new experience with the latest Hollywood blockbusters and retro diner offerings.
+ Then you’ll need seasonal passes for Wet’n’Wild, the biggest water theme park with over 40 slides and attractions.
+ You wouldn’t want to be miss getting scared out of your wits in a ghost tour of old St Bartholomew’s Church. The mere sight of the church that sits on the highest point in Blacktown surrounded by an old cemetery and worn tombstones cascading all the way down the hill sends chills to the bones.
> But if all you want is a peaceful break from a crazy work week, then there’s Prospect Reservoir and Nature Reserve. It’s a lovely place for family picnics with a children's playground, walking and cycling track+
